IRONWORKER PRE- APPRENTICE COURSE

 

 

Course Description:

 

The Pre-apprentice course for Ironworkers is a 60-hour course designed to prepare the pre-apprentice with skills needed to work safely with particular tasks for various job sites. This course will cover the apprenticeship route towards certification, history of the union and an overview of the Ironworker trade, with an emphasis on safety awareness and accident prevention. The course involves both classroom and shop instruction.

 

Course Objective:

 

The objective of this course is to prepare the pre-apprentice to be safe and construction ready for their first time working in the iron working trade.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

Upon the successful completion of this course, the pre-apprentice will have been introduced to:

 

  • Alberta Ironworker Apprenticeship Program

 

  • Work Ethics and Attitude

 

  • History of Union

 

  • Construction Safety Training

 

  • (not included in 9 day course) Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

 

  • Trade Math, Measurements (Metric & Imperial) and Drawings

 

  • Appropriate Selection and Use of Fall Protection Systems

 

  • Crane Signals

 

  • Rigging and Knots

 

  • Safe use of Hand and Power Tools

 

  • Structural Steel Members and Shapes

 

  • Safe and Effective Set-up and Use of Oxy-Fuel Cutting Equipment

 

  • Safe and Effective Set-up and Use of Electric Arc Welding Equipment

 

 

 

 

 

 

Target Candidates:

 

This course is for recruits interested in the iron working trade and without previous experience. To take this course a Pre-apprentice must :

 

·         have Grade Ten Math and English, or equivalent, or pass the entrance exam

·         be physically fit

·         be comfortable at heights

·         have a reliable vehicle

·         enjoy working outdoors

·         be conscientious of safety

·         have a willingness to travel to various sites

·         have an inclination to work cooperatively with others

(Perfect Attendance and Punctuality is Mandatory)

 

Length of Course:

 

This course is 60 hours in length, 6 hours per day, 5 days a week, with 45-minute lunch breaks. (Lunches not provided).

Course Required Materials for Pre-apprentice:

 

  • You MUST come dressed in work clothes with CSA approval steel toed boots.  (Contact David, Instructor @ (780) 819-4766 for the type of boots required, if you plan to purchase prior to the course.)

Read and answer questions for assignments #1, 2 and 3 in Orientation Manual for Ironworkers

Read and answer questions in, “Using Trades Math” booklet  

Read and answer questions in, “WHMIS workbook” booklet
