Alberta Ironworkers Apprenticeship and Training Plan Bursary and Reimbursement Guidelines.The following guide outlines the intent and contributions into the Training fund as well as the process for reimbursement for members who wish to access their Training Fund.
The Training Fund was created through our Collective Agreement on July 5, 1969 with the purpose of supporting and providing training programs for members and signatory contractors of local 720 Edmonton and Local 725 Calgary. The training fund provides support and training including apprenticeship for the trades of:
- Ironworker (Generalist, Structural/Ornamental and Reinforcing)
The Board of Trustees consists of 8 members:
- 4 Union trustees
- This includes the Business managers of local 720 and 725 as well as one elected member of Local 720 and Local 725
- 4 Management trustees
- These Trustees are chosen from signatory contractors of Local 720 and Local 725

As a Member how much of the Fund can I access?
What happens if I do not use the whole amount in the 2 years (24 months)?
At the end of the 2 year (24 month) period the Members Training Fund Bursary will reset, any unused monies from the previous 2 year (24 month) period does not add to the new Bursary amount. The Member cannot bank the unused Training Fund for later use.
Is there a charge for training, testing and practice taken at the local training center?
All training, testing and practice performed at the training center and weld shop has a cost associated with it, this cost is paid for by the members Training Fund as an automatic deduction based on course attendance and time. Contact the training center for more information of current members pricing for training, testing and practice time.
Does the Training Fund Bursary cover my apprenticeship tuition?
Yes, the Tuition fees and books required for apprentices who are completing technical training in the trades of Ironworker and Welder are paid for by utilizing the Members Training Fund Bursary.
What happens if I use all of the monies in my fund an I still want/need training?
The Training Fund is limited to $3000 per Member for a 2 year (24 month) period, if the Member has spent their total Training Fund Bursary before the 2 year (24 month) period and requests/requires further training, testing or practice they will be responsible to pay the fees on their own without reimbursement from the fund.
What if the training costs more than the funds I have in my Training Fund?
Any training, testing and practice cost over the Members $3000 Training Bursary amount must be paid by the members and is not eligible for reimbursement.
How do I get reimbursed for training, testing and practice that I booked and paid for on my own?
In order to be reimbursed the Members must do the following:
- Contact the Training center to verify that the training, testing and practice is approved and there are sufficient funds available BEFORE you book and pay.
- Book, pay and attend the required training, testing or practice
- Submit the receipt and completion certificate for the training, testing and practice to the training fund for reimbursement.
If I am not working do I still have access to the Training Fund?
All Members are required to work a minimum of 1000 hours per year (12 months) for a signatory contractor within our collective agreement in order to maintain access to the Training Fund and Bursary. If the Member has not worked the required 1000 hours they will need to pay upfront for any training, testing and practice until they are dispatched to a signatory contractor through Local 720 and Local 725. If the Member is currently working or has been dispatched they will have access to the Training Fund as described above.
If I owe monies to the Training Fund can I still access testing, training and practice?
Any Member who owes monies to the training fund will not be provided any services until the debt has been paid in full.
Is there a time limit for reimbursement of training, testing, practice?
Reimbursement for training, testing and practice must be process within one year (12 months) of the completion date of the training, testing and practice. Any request for reimbursement made after the one year (12 month) deadline will not be processed.
