No Experience
I have no Experience but I am interested in becoming an Ironworker?
Ironworking in Alberta is considered a COMPULSORY Trade, this means that anyone who does the duties of a Structural/Ornamental, Reinforcing or Generalist Ironworker in the province of Alberta must hold a Journeyman ticket or be a registered apprentice in the trade. Journeyman and Apprentice credentials must be issued from a provincial authority or Government agency. A list of Journeyman and apprentice credentials that are accepted in Alberta can be viewed at:
http://tradesecrets.alberta.ca/experiencedworkers/recognized-trade-certificate/
In order to start an apprenticeship application in any trade the worker must FIRST get employment in the trade that they are interested in. Once the worker has employment the company can enter into an apprenticeship contract with the apprentice.
How do I get a job as an Ironworker without an apprentice contract?
- Ironworkers’ local 720 frequently posts jobs on our dispatch for 1st year apprentices. These jobs are open to workers who already have an apprentice contract as well as those who have not yet been indentured as an apprentice.
- Any worker who is dispatched through local 720 that does not have a valid apprenticeship contract will be indentured as a 1st year apprentice BEFORE they start work in the trade
What do I need in order to be registered as an apprentice in Alberta?

- Applicants who do cannot produce a transcript or who have not completed the above classes must write the trade entrance exam PRIOR to completing an apprentice application.
